Tips and examples of effective thesis statements

Thesis statement is crucial for a doctoral level research. Right in the beginning you need to know what kind of research are you doing.

  • The first kind of research is analytical research which breaks down an issue or an idea into smaller components to present it to the audience.
  • The expository research does the task of explaining something to the audience.
  • The third  type of research which is the argumentative research, makes a claim about the topic and justifies it with specific evidence. The main objective of an argumentative research is to convince the audience that the claim that has been made is valid and has the basis taken from the evidence that has been provided.

The first characteristic of the thesis statement is that it should be very precise and specific, covering only what is discussed in the research with the backing and support of the evidence presented.

You may draft your thesis statement in the beginning of your research and as you progress your topic may diversify or modify a little. Eventually you may reflect your thesis statement to understand well enough if it is synchronised with your final research.

Examples of thesis statements:

A thesis statement of an analytical research

An analysis of the admission process in school is challenging for the counsellors to define the parameters of admission.  Whether to accept student who have a brighter academic bent or students with a flair for extra curricular activities.

the research should:

  • give an analysis of the school admission process
  • Explain the challenges in defining the admission parameters

Thesis statement of an exploratory research

The routine of a typical school student is characterised  by time spent in doing different activities such as doing studies, attending regular classes and spending time with peers.

The research should:

  • Give a detailed explanation of students spending their time studying or attending classes along with varied extracurricular studies.

Thesis statement of an argumentative research:

School students should be put into an eight week internship programme in their field of interest before they move into specialised subject choices to know what is the best career alternative for them.

The research should:

  • Give substantive arguments to give evidence claiming the reasons this method should be adopted to expose the students to an internship programme before subject preferences are made.

Once you are aware of the type of research you are taking up. It will be easier to draft the most apt thesis statement for your document.
