The value to a project of multiple editing

When a project is particularly long and exceptionally tough, students wish to have a system of running it through multiple rounds of editing. This kind of editing is done in fields like medicine, and finance and specialised scientific subjects where it is essential that the editor also have some kind of subject matter expertise. The students want to make sure that their project is perfect in every sense and the university boards will have no reason to find fault with it. So how do multiple rounds of editing work?

• First the project might be looked over by a subject matter expert who checks the content to make sure that it is well researched and well analyzed.
• Then the content would go into the hands of a copy editor who will check it for language and for the quality of writing.
• Then finally it will go to a senior editor who gives it an overall look over to make sure that no flaws have gone uncorrected.

It is only after this entire process has been covered and the project has been found satisfactory that the report is handed back to the student.

Of course, this kind of editing could take a long time since so many experts have to look through the project and make different kinds of corrections. It is advisable for the students to complete the project early and start the editing process with plenty of time left for the deadline so that the editors are not rushed and they are able to get through the task with the vivid detail that is so important for this kind of work. But multiple editing has the advantage of being thorough which is essential in large projects, even if it does take a little bit of time.
